Do:

  • Keep up with a regular exercise program of three or four 20-30 minute sessions per week.
  • Take antibiotics an hour before having dental work done or before any invasive procedure.
  • Always apply antibiotics to cuts and scratches.
  • Get and carry a card certifying that you've had a joint replacement, since your new joint may set off security alarms at airports, malls and government buildings.
  • Take regular one- to three-mile walks.

Don't:

  • Run.
  • Play singles tennis.
  • Water-ski.
  • Ski.
  • Snowboard.
  • Skate.
  • Skateboard.
  • Participate in high-risk activities such as skydiving.
